Notice where the moisture begins. Condensation, plumbing leaks and water coming through the building envelope can look similar. Note the timing, affected surfaces and relationship to rainfall before selecting a repair.
Three things to check
- Where does water first appear: wall, floor joint, window or drain?
- Does the problem follow rain, snowmelt or periods of dry weather?
- Are finishes hiding the foundation or an existing drainage system?
Prepare for an assessment
Record the affected locations, the timing of incidents and the weather. Gather information about existing systems. Take photos only from safe areas and mention previous repairs.
General guidance cannot replace an assessment of your property. Options depend on access, local requirements and the existing system.
