What causes basement flooding?
Surface water, groundwater, sewer backup and plumbing failures need different responses. The entry point and conditions at the time help narrow the cause. A sump pump and a backwater valve address different water pathways.
What to look for.
- Has water backed up through a floor drain or plumbing fixture?
- Is a backwater valve already installed and accessible?
- What fixtures connect to the affected drain?
Observe only from a safe place. Do not touch electrical equipment in wet areas or climb onto a wet roof.
