WHAT’S THE WATER DOING?

Water coming through a basement floor

Water at a floor joint is different from a drain backup. Record whether the water emerges at a wall-floor junction, a crack or a fixture. Keep clear of electrical hazards and do not assume sealing the visible opening resolves the source.

Water coming through a basement floor

What to look for.

  • Where does water first appear: wall, floor joint, window or drain?
  • Does the problem follow rain, snowmelt or periods of dry weather?
  • Are finishes hiding the foundation or an existing drainage system?

Observe only from a safe place. Do not touch electrical equipment in wet areas or climb onto a wet roof.
